Intramural Recreational Sports Officials’/Scorekeepers’ Manual

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  SPORTS OFFICIAL AND SCOREKEEPER

 

1.                    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

·         The Intramural Sports Official/Scorekeeper shall, to the best of his/her ability, officiate and /or keep accurate records and score of those contests sponsored by the Department of Recreational Sports, in accordance with the rules of the sport and the regulations of the department.  The official is charged with the responsibility of maintaining orderly conduct on the court or field to which he/she is assigned, and will perform other duties as outlined below. 

 

·            Attend all training clinics and scheduling meetings.

·            Fulfill schedule obligations.

·            Submit to periodic evaluations.

·            Arrive at the court/field ready to work at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to scheduled game time.

·            Insure that game equipment functions properly and that games are played under safe conditions; report the need for facility or equipment repairs to the sport supervisor on duty.

·            Penalize, in accordance with the rules of the sport and the regulations of the department, any unsportsmanlike conduct by participants.

·            Be attentive at all times; do not allow friends to visit or distract you while you work. If you discover that you are scheduled on a friend’s game, let the supervisor know so you can be moved.

·            Report for reassignment in the event of forfeited games.

·            Report sportsmanship grade of teams on scoresheets after all games.

·            Have thorough knowledge of the intramural sports handbook, and any policies and procedures of the department covered in training sessions.

·            Attempt to resolve problems if possible; receive any requests for protest and document them, then immediately contact the sport supervisor on duty.  In the case of a fight or any other type of altercation, report it to the sport supervisor on duty immediately.  DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, ATTEMPT TO BREAK UP A FIGHT!  Your job in this case is to record the numbers of players involved so that proper disciplinary action can occur.

·            Report any misuse of the facility, equipment, or any discipline problems from participants or spectators, to the sport supervisor immediately; follow up with a completed incident report form.

·            Contact the supervisor in the event of an accident.  Remain with the injured party until relieved; help the supervisor follow up with a completed injury report form.

·            Strive to maintain positive public relations; answer questions of participants, or direct them to someone who will be able to help them.

TRAINING PROCEDURES

 

Prior to each season, rules and mechanics clinics will be conducted for all officials/scorekeepers.  The clinics provide a comprehensive review of the rules for the sport and the mechanics necessary to effectively administer the rules.  The sports clinics will consist of multiple 1 - 2 hour rules and mechanics sessions, and possibly scrimmage games.  An official/scorekeeper must attend each clinic to be eligible to work that sport.  One-on-one training at the game site will occur throughout the season as necessary.


 

 

 

SCHEDULING PROCEDURES

 

Schedules will be made on a weekly or a biweekly basis on the Thursday prior to the assigned week.  Each schedule will contain assignments for the following week's games.  Officials/Scorekeepers are responsible for signing for their assignments in person at the Intramural Office.  Any hours not signed for by Friday at 2:00 p.m. will be made available on a first-come first-served basis, pending the approval of the Director of Intramural Recreational Sports.

 

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

 

·            Provide a quality program for training student personnel to officiate and keep accurate records of intramural sports contests within the Department of Recreational Sports.

 

·            Provide a program that will train student personnel about policies and procedures of the Department of Recreational Sports in an effort to facilitate a feeling of ownership of the program and provide a network for better communication with participants.

 

·            Provide an opportunity for student development by offering the opportunity to work in a competitive atmosphere where performance is evaluated on a regular basis.

 

CONDUCT WHILE PLAYING

 

All intramural officials/scorekeepers are held to a higher sportsmanship standard than those who are just participants.  Officials/Scorekeepers are representatives of the program.  Other participants recognize you as Intramural Sports employees and your behavior should be a model for others to follow.  Intramural Sports employees will not be given any privileges not given to other participants and will be subject to discipline for incidents of poor conduct.

 

 

AWARDS AND INCENTIVES

 

The Intramural Recreational Sports Department has developed and awards program to recognize outstanding officials/scorekeepers in each officiated sport.  The awards shall be determined by a vote among Director and Intramural Sports Supervisors.  The awards for each sport shall be as follows:

·         Most Valuable Official

·         Most Improved Official

·         Rookie Official of the Year

 

In addition to these awards, outside officiating opportunities exist for those officials who are interested. 

 

I understand that disciplinary procedures may be invoked for a violation as follows:

 

1.                    Any act deemed unsuitable by the Director

                               

                                1st offense-written reprimand and/or termination**

                                2nd offense-termination

                                                **will depend upon individual circumstance

                                ***Any act deemed unsuitable may result in immediate termination

 

2.                    Miss a shift, late for a shift, inadequately prepared for shift

 

1st offense - verbal reprimand/possible loss of assignments

                                2nd offense - written reprimand and loss of assignments for two weeks

                                3rd offense - termination

 

3.             Failure to attend required training clinic

 

Official/Scorekeeper will not be allowed to work that sport.   If there are extenuating circumstances,

the official/Scorekeeper may complete special assignments in lieu of training (with consent of Director)
